Last year the team went to the FIRST Robotics Competition as a rookie team, and had a blast. We won the 2009 Chesapeake Regional 2009 Rookie Inspiration Award, which celebrates a rookie team for outstanding efforts in community outreach and recruiting students to engineering. The team was ranked #40 out of 55 teams, but did not qualify for finals.
Everyone is getting pumped to go to the competition, named Breakaway. In this game, teams form an alliance of three robots and try to score points by kicking a soccer ball into the other alliances’ goal. The playing field is divided into three sections divided by bumps that the robots can climb over to move to different areas of the field. In the final 20 seconds of the match, the robot must climb onto a platform to score points. Our robot is designed to be able to “dribble” and kick the soccer ball, and hopefully will soon be able to suspend itself from the platform.
Because of the massive snow storm, the team lost a week of time to work on building the robot. Luckily, with the help of our amazing mentor, Dr. Joe Johnson, the team has managed to create a mobile robot with great ball control. Dr. Johnson has motivated and inspired our team, and his experience is a great asset to the team. He has access to people who can manufacture parts for us, which allowed us to finish the robot in time.
We would like to thank all of the teachers, mentors, and parents who have supported us. We could not do this without you.
